Marlin come in 3 species in the Pacific.- Black , Blue & Striped Marlin. Billfish are exclusively tag & release and and be caught year around in Fiji. The small blue marlin in the picture unfortunately died during the fight. A reel seat failure occurred making it very hard to fight the fish and by the time we did get the marlin it was too late.
Yellowfin tuna can be caught year around in Fiji. Dec. through May is the peak season however. The tuna pictured below is Vai'lima's biggest, 58 kg. This fish ripped the TLD-50 right off the rod and we were forced to handline the fish in. We managed to land it but it took 3 of us and some luck.LL
We spend a good amount of our fishing time chasing wahoo because Fiji has some of the best Wahoo fishing on the planet. This monster wahoo weighed in at 45 kg. and was our boats biggest. However, we catch many fish approching this size. Our average fish during the peak of wahoo season(may-dec)is pushing 25 kg. and it is not uncommon to have 5 fish to hit all 5 rods at once. Talk about mayhem.
In Fiji we call Spanish Mackeral, Walu. Walu are avalible year around and are pound for pound are one of the better fighters in the sea. What Walu lack in length they make up for in girth. This 25 kg. Walu fought like a Wahoo twice its size. Walu also go great on the BBQ and make great sashimi.
Sailfish are the fastest fish in the ocean and have been clock doing 70 mph. They are the ultimate gamefish on light tackle.
